"As I reflect on the progression of my life's journey, from its beginnings as a child in Vienna, traveling to England with a Kindertransport, experiencing the war years in London as an adolescent and young man, followed by a unique postwar role in Germany as interpreter at the Nuremberg trials, then leading me to the Hawaiian islands and to a career in international education, I sense a thread throughout these often turbulent times. My journey took place with the backdrop of extraordinary events on the international scene through much of the 20th century, placing me in Vienna, London, and Nuremberg as both observer and participant, and later in Hawai'i, opening opportunities and challenges in education."
